What to expectTaking the initial step to seek professional help can be challenging.
Whether you're stepping into counselling for the first time or returning with prior experience, it's natural to have questions about what lies ahead. As counsellors, we cultivate an atmosphere where individuals and couples feel secure to explore their thoughts, behaviours, and emotions, free from judgment. Building a strong, supportive therapeutic relationship is key for a meaningful counselling experience, which is why authentically getting to know you is important.
IN COUPLES COUNSELLINGCouples begin with a joint session to explore relationship history, current concerns, and hopes for therapy. Individual sessions may be offered at this phase to give each partner space to share personal history and experiences that shape how they show up in the relationship. Then, ongoing joint sessions help support deeper understanding, healthier communication, and more secure connection between partners.
Our Approach
The practice is informed by the following therapeutic approaches:
Relationally focused therapyDeveloping a strong therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client is central to the work we will do together. Relational patterns from outside of therapy show up within a counselling session, and there we have the opportunity to explore new ways of relating within a safe space.
Emotion-focused therapyEmotions are a key element in psychological well-being. Together we will examine and validate emotions rather than avoiding or suppressing them, allowing us to explore the role of emotions in shaping thoughts and behaviours.
Person-centred therapyThis method is based on the humanistic belief that clients naturally possess a drive for growth and self-actualization, using this inner force for therapeutic change. In this framework, the counsellor plays a crucial role in creating a nonjudgmental environment that supports sincere and open self-exploration.
Holistic approach With a trauma-informed lens, other modalities used in sessions may include Mindfulness & Meditation and Somatic Based Therapies..
EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED COUPLES THERAPYAn attachment-based model that focuses on the emotional patterns that arise between partners, especially when they feel disconnected or misunderstood. This approach helps couples identify the deeper needs and emotions beneath conflict and supports the development of safer, more secure ways of relating and reconnecting.
GOTTMAN-INFORMED COUPLES THERAPYThis framework helps couples recognize unhelpful interaction patterns and develop healthy habits that support long-term connection and resilience. Practical tools are provided for strengthening communication, reducing conflict, and building trust and appreciation.
